V
.1
a commonly used abandonment procedure'in years past- and although
frequently done in conformance with local regulations, this
method is known to leave voids which may contain residual
product. Although several sources provided conflicting
information as to the date of abandonment of the fuel tanks,
it is believed that this occurred approximately five years ago.
Immediately North, to the rear of Bill's Bait Shop lies a 3'
wide, 4' deep trench which extends from the eastern property
line, West to the western property line along Fresno Avenue.
,r The trench then continues North along the East property line.
The largest portion of the 1789 site is occupied by a long,
narrow asphalt paved parking lot which rests North of the bait
shop. This area was formerly an alfalfa field.
The Linde Division of the Union Carbide Corporation once occupied
the 1681 site. A portion of the Linde facility is reputed to
ti have been used as a disposal site for industrial waste materials,
however, this area presently lies fallow- having only been cut
and tilled for fire control for the past several years. As a
result, there are no surface features which might serve to
support the contention that a disposal facility once existed
on site.
Sites within the area upon which significant contamination events
are known and/or believed to have occurred are:
1) 1405 South Fresno Avenue- a site which has been
occupied by Tillie Lewis Foods, Ogden Foods, and
Pet Foods. Health District records indicate that
a 40,000 gallon concrete vault was demolished at
this facility and soil beneath excavated to a depth
of thirty feet with the subsequent removal of
10,000 cubic yards of soil contaminated with #5
fuel oil. Significant volumes of groundwater
were apparently extracted to facilitate the soil
excavation process. Sampling of three groundwater
monitoring wells on March 9, 1988 revealed only
low levels of petroleum hydrocarbons within Monitoring
Well #1. Subsequent analyses of groundwater samples
acquired at this site apparently failed to reveal any
detectable levels of petroleum hydrocarbons within
groundwater. Also removed from this site were one
1000 gallon underground regular gasoline storage tank
and one 300 gallon underground unleaded gasoline storage
tank. Data acquired on April 8, 1987 showed
groundwater moving in a northerly direction across
the site; while gradient was found to be to the
Northeast on February 16, 1988.
2) The Holt Bros. Tractor Company, located 1/8 mile East
of 1789 Charter Way was identified as a contaminated
