site by the Local Health District, however District
files were not available for review during the term
of this investigation.
3) Carnation Foods located Northeast of 1789 Charter
Way is a known site of significant contamination.
Groundwater movement has been shown to be Southeast
across the site. Several pages of chemical contam-
inants were listed for this site with the San Joaquin
Local Health District.
4) A United States Navy facility located on Navy Road
was listed by the Local Health District as having
3'-4' of petroleum hydrocarbon floating on the water
table.
SAMPLING PROTOCOL
The parking lot area and trenches north of Bill's Bait Shop
were an area of concern for pesticide contamination of surface
soils due to alfalfa having been grown in this area in the past.
This area was divided into four quadrants for sampling purposes.
Four (4) soil samples were then obtained from each quadrant
(M -D through #4A -D) at a depth of 0 to 6 inches by driving
clean brass sampling tubes into the surface soils with the use
of a mallet (see site map #1 attached for sampling locations).
The ends of each tube were then promptly wrapped with aluminum
foil, fitted with plastic caps, sealed with black electrical
tape, labeled, placed on dry ice, and then transported to Sequoia
Analytical Laboratory of San Carlos, California, a certified
hazardous waste analytical laboratory under chain of custody.
The four soils samples from each of the four quadrants were
then composited by the laboratory for analysis for Organochlorine
Pesticides and PCBs using EPA Method 8080.
INSTALLATION AND SAMPLING OF EXPLORATORY SOIL BORINGS
Under the direction of Walter Floyd, Uriah Staff Geologist,
and the staff of Spectrum Exploration, Inc. of Stockton, CA
undertook five on site borings (VTB-1 through VTB-5) at locations
specified on site map #2 in the area occupied by the abandoned
underground fuel storage tanks just north of Bill's Bait Shop
utilizing a truck -mounted drill rig equipped with a 8"
diameter hollow -stem auger. During the course of the borings,
discrete samples were acquired in a manner consistent with
'r Regional Water Quality Control Board and San Joaquin County
guidelines utilizing a California Modified Split Spoon Sampler
driven through the hollow stem of the drilling auger.
