Those electing to respond should adhere to the following:
♦ Latex gloves and goggles must be worn.
♦ Store employees acting as observers of an accident must remain
at a reasonable distance to avoid potential exposure to blood or
body fluids. A distance of 10 feet is recommended.
In the event a razor blade, needle from a Dennison gun, or other
sharp object that may be contaminated is found, these steps will be
followed (assume that any sharp object has been contaminated):
♦ Use "safe practices" to pick up the object, e.g.: dust pan.
♦ Place the object in a puncture proof container and dispose of it
in the domestic waste. Puncture proof container could be a
glass or metal container.
Exposure incidents
Employees that do not adhere to the precautions outlined in the
cleanup, decontamination, and sanitizing sections which follow
and have any form of contact with body fluids should be
considered "exposed" for the purposes of this section.
The following steps will be taken immediately after any employee
has been exposed to blood or other body fluids.
The exposed employee must:
♦ Wash hands and any other exposed skin with soap and water.
Flush eyes (if exposed) with water by cupping in hands and
splashing it into eyes.
Note: Decontaminate the sink afterwards with a 1 part bleach
to 10 parts water (1:10) solution for 10 minutes.
♦ Remove any clothing exposed to blood or other body fluids as
soon as practical. Place clothing in a plastic bag, then seal the
bag. Decontaminate thoroughly before wearing again in
accordance with the instructions on cleaning garments.
♦ Exposure to pathogens may qualify as a Worker's
Compensation claim. Report any incident following normal
reporting procedures for your location.
♦ Report to the assigned Medical clinic for follow-up.
Note: The Hepatitis B vaccine series will be made available to
all exposed employees during the clinic follow-up.
♦ Follow all treatment as prescribed by the medical clinic.
Toys "R" Us, Inc.
HAZARD COMMUNICATION PROGRAM BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS 40
9/1/95
