(Stratus)
on your behalf and has the following comments .
Stratus states in the Addendum that they consider the contamination at this site to be
adequately defined , and recommends preparation of a problem assessment/feasibility
study report.
Concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in the groundwater are very high
in the source area, both in shallow and deep-screened groundwater monitoring wells, and
down gradient from the source area . The furthest down gradient well, MW-10, screened
in a deeper zone, is impacted by benzene and 1 ,24chloroethane ( 1 ,2-DCA). The
recently installed deep monitoring well , MW-14, located furthest upgradient relative to the
onsite source area , is impacted by total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and
benzene, though the concentrations appear to be declining . Additional lateral assessment
is needed toward the east. The Regional Water Quality Control Board will not concur with
closure of sites at which the 1 ,2-DCA is not fully defined .
Discrete groundwater samples collected at depths greater than 120 feet below surface
grade (bsg ) from cone penetrometer test (CPT) borings in the source area were non-
detect except for 0. 94 micrograms per liter (µg/1) toluene and 0. 90 µg/I xylenes in CPT-1
at approximately 130 feet bsg . Based on the CPT data, the groundwater contamination
appears to be mostly vertically defined at approximately 120 feet bsg . Soil contamination
is still present in the saturated zone soil . Soil vapor extraction remediation conducted
from 1994 through 1996 appears to have removed most shallow vadose zone soil
contaminants in the source area .
Please proceed with preparation and submittal of a feasibility study that compares at least
two alternatives for cost and effectiveness addressing the contamination remaining at this
site. Include in the report a work plan to complete the site investigation . The feasibility
study is due for submittal no later than April 27 , 2007 .
