-" Snecifiration 9-91025
3.0 mm
The Work Plan approach is to remove Volatile Organic Compound (VOC)
contamination from soil by designing a soil treatment cell extending from the
site surface to the water table, approximately 65-70 feet below grade. Design
of the well-extraction field would be based on pilot-test data discussed in
Section 4.0 of this specification. VOCs would be removed from the soils by
establishing air flow through passive injection wells located around the
treatment cell and withdrawing VOC-laden air via an
perimeter of the soil mi
extraction well located near the center of the cell. Contanated air
~ withdrawn from the soil would be passed through either acarbon-adsorption
bed or a catalytic oxidizer for treatment. Selection of the Air Pollution
Control(APC) device would be determined from pilot test data. The carbon
bed or oxidizer satisfies the requirements for an air-pollution control system.
Carbon, when exhausted, would be removed, replaced and transported to a
:ecycler for regeneration. The treated air would be discharged to atmosphere.
Treatment would proceed until VOC concentrations in the soil have been
reduced to below clean-up standard levels (to be determined). A post
remediation soil assessment would be conducted to evaluate VOC
concentrations in treated soil.
4.0 hhQLTOt
4,1 The Pilot-Extraction Test is designed to utilize one vapor-extraction well, to be
installed as described in Section 5.0 of this specification, and manometer points
to be located at approximate radial distances from the extraction
welt of 15,30,
and 50 feet, t+s shown on Figure 3. Tubes for manometer points
installed within the interval of extraction, approximately 30 and 63 feet below
ground surface. The purpose of the test is to: 1) approximate vadose-zone
permeability which will provide data for design of well depths, well spacings, and
' extraction rates, 2) estimate the decay curve for TPH, concentration from the
well vapors, and 3) evaluate expected air pollution control system loading_ >ne
Pilot Test will also provide information to select the blower, piping and manifold
diameters, and well geometries.
- 4.2 The location of VEW-1 would be approxir..ately three feet east of MW-1 far
which available soil analytical results indicate high concentrations of TPH$. It is
-1 would be
anticipated that the data from the pilot test will indicate that VEW
of suitable design and placement for the full scale system as well as the pilot test.
4.3 A 1.5 HP blower with a capacity of 127 SUM at 4.3 inches of mercury vacuum
- - -- -- --and-65 inches of-water discharge pressure would be used for the test. Power
would be supplied by'the Apache Plastics facility. -Either-115V or-230V single
phase power would be required. Blower electricals would be explosion proof.
The blower would discharge through four carbon beds, each comprised of an 85-
gallon carbon canister. Moisture would be removed from the vapor stream prior
w to the carbon canisters with an in-line knockout pot: Drawing M-1 is the Piping
REMEDIATION
B-2
SERVICES.
