5.0 REMEDIAL ACTIONS
The following remedial action summary is based on information presented by EMCON in Site
Closure Report, July 18, 1997, and Quarterly Monitoring Reports submitted by Upgradient
Environmental Consultants for the first and second quarter 1997.
5.1 Soil Vapor Extraction
An SVES was continuously operated at the site from June 1994 through December 1996, and
March through June 1997. Intermittent operation was completed in January and February 1997,
and during the third quarter 1997. SVE was reportedly discontinued during the third quarter
1997 due to increased water levels beneath the site. Clustered well VEW-1 was initially
manifolded to the SVES in 1994. Extraction from well VEW-2 was initiated, and extraction
from well VEW-1 deep was discontinued, in November 1996.
Concentrations of extracted GRO in soil vapor generally decreased during the period of SVE
operation in wells VEW-1 (shallow and deep). Concentrations of extracted soil vapor reportedly
ranged from 12,000 ppmv to 800 ppmv (VEW-1-shallow) and 23,000 ppmv to 2,800 ppmv
(VEW-1-deep). Information regarding extracted soil vapor concentrations from well VEW-2
were not discussed in the EMCON report. An estimated 16,200 pounds of GRO were reportedly
removed from the subsurface by the SVES.
5.2 Soil Excavation
At the time of UST removal activities (August 1988), a limited excavation of impacted soil,
extending to approximately 10 feet bgs, was completed. Approximately 12 cubic yards of soil
were reportedly excavated and removed from the site. Based on residual concentrations of
petroleum hydrocarbons in samples collected at the time of excavation, an estimated 107 pounds
of GRO were removed from the subsurface at this time.
KAApache Plastics\Reports\apache-scm-assessment report2046.doc Page 15 5TRATU5
