fII,--
6ETTLER-RYANINC
54
September 19, 2000
Mr. Richard C. Prima, Jr.
City of Lodi Public Works Director
221 West Pine Street
Lodi, CA 95240
Subject: Discharge Report for August 2000, Wastewater Discharge Permit #295, Former
Chevron Station #9-5775, 301 West Kettleman Lane, Lodi, CA.
Mr. Prima:
Gettler-Ryan Inc. (GR) has prepared this report at the request of Chevron Products Company. Chevron
discharges treated groundwater to the industrial sewer under City of Lodi Wastewater Discharge Permit
#295. Extraction and treatment of groundwater at the subject site was initiated on July 3, 2000. The
groundwater system (GWS) extracts impacted groundwater from well EX -1. Extracted groundwater is
. routed through a particulate filter, then three 2,000 -pound liquid phase activated carbon vessels plumbed in
series. Locations of the treatment system compound and well EX -1 are shown on Figure 2. A treatment
system schematic is shown on Figure 3.
Summary of Violations
Midpointl, Midpoint2 and Effluent samples collected on August 16, 2000, contained detectable
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons. After collection of confirmation samples on August 18, 2000,
the GWS was shut down. Analytical data indicated the most likely source for the detected compounds was
the glue used to assemble the GWS piping. The system was flushed and restarted on August 23, 2000.
Confirming samples collected on August 23 did not contain hydrocarbon compounds. This was reported to
the City of Lodi in a letter dated August 31, 2000.
Carbon Change Out
Due to detection of 20.2 parts per million (ppm) of methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE) in the sample collected
July 26, 2000, from Midpoint i (between the first and the second carbon vessels), GR contracted with US
Filter/Westates to change out the carbon in the first carbon vessel. US Filter/Westates changed this carbon
on Monday, August, 7, 2000. The GWS was sampled again on August 3, 2000, prior to carbon change out.,
however, results of this second sample set were not received from the laboratory prior to carbon change out.
Petroleum hydrocarbons were not detected in the second sample from Midpoint 1.
346408.07
6747 Sierra Court, Suite J 9 Dublin, California 94568 • (925) 551-7555
