3.2.3 Bioremediation
Background
A biological enhancing, soil oxygenating material, produced by marine microorganisms i$
available. This`material is manufactured by Alpha Environmental, Inc and vended in
California by Diamond Environmental Services,Ltd. The material is known as"Alpha Bio-
Catalyst". To treat hydrocarbons, the bio-catalyst is mixed with hydrocarbon feeding bacteria
and basic nutrients,(nitrogen and phosphorous). The mixture, call it the treatment solution,
is applied as an aqueous solution. Generally measurable reduction of the hydrocarbon can
be measured within thirty days of application. Copies of the Material Safety Data Sheet and
other technical information is included in the Appendix.
I
Should the project warrant a greater supply of oxygen we would entertain the possibility of
bioventing. Air would be supplied to the treatment zone in a limited quantity to.preclude the
possibility of causing air spargirL&
Proposal
Should the soil sampling suggest that:
1. Excavation is financially impractical
2. The contamination has migrated close to or under the adjacent building, such that
excavation is not possible without risk to the structure.
i 3. Other factors which favor bioremediation are identified.
And in-situ bioremediation can be accomplished in a cost effective manner. The following
F ,
is proposed
' The general morphology of the spedfic site serves to provide interesting potential for
treatment with in-situ bioremediation. When the original excavation of the 1040 gallon tank
was performed a significant portion of the back-fill was pea gravel The pea gravel mass has
' open space because of its uniform size and shape. The open space could be used as a
charging area for the treatment media. If the contamination has not migrated a great
distance, infiltration from the charged pea gravel mass could reach and inoculate the zone of
' contamination.
i
I
I
i
Page 4
