FOOTHILL
• ENGINEERING
t ^1279PE)DY CREEK LANE LODI, CA 95240
(209) 368-9381 FAX (209) 367-1163
Harlin Knoll August 5, 1999
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
P. O. Box 388
Stockton, CA 95201
Fax: 464-0138
Subject: Sun West Liquors, 2449 W. Kettleman Lane, Lodi, CA LOP
Dear Sir:
The owner of Sun West Liquors requested that Foothill Engineering conduct additional site investigations
to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of the contamination found in earlier investigations. Please
find below the report covering this phase of work completed under the work plan dated May 24, 1999.
REPORT ON THE EXTENT OF UNDERGROUND HYDROCARBON PLUME
AT SUN WEST LIQUORS
History
On 7/10/1998 Thorpe Oil of Lodi, California removed the three gasoline USTs from the Sun West
Property. Soil samples from underneath the UST's and the dispenser piping indicated that some leaks had
occurred during the life of the gasoline sales operation. Foothill Engineering did a site investigation to
determine the vertical and horizontal extent of the gasoline contamination on 8/13/1998 and 812111998.
A listing of the results of analysis of the soil samples is attached.
Geomatrix installed the monitoring well GMXI at a location+1-25 feet south of the UST excavation and
sampled first groundwater. That analysis is attached. Geomatrix also made three scsil borings (GB#1,
GB42, and GB#3) with both soil samples and groundwater samples extracted (see attached map for
location). All samples on GB#1, GB#2, and GB#3 were non-detect for all compounds analyzed (see
attached recaps of data).
The work plan of 5124199 called for the installation of three soil borings to be located on the Sun West
Liquor property and the possible installation of a fourth soil boring on the south side of Kettleman Lane.
Soil samples were to be extracted at predetermined depths for laboratory analysis. A monitoring well to
sample ground water was to be constructed in each of the soil borings.
Procedure
The soil bores for the monitoring wells were drilled with a hollow stem auger. Samples were extracted
at five foot intervals by a standard BX split spoon sampler. Pre-determined samples and samples that
indicated signs of contamination were sealed and placed on ice for transport. Soil borings terminated at
a depth of fifty feet or to the vertical extent of the contamination. The monitoring wells were installed
1
