FIELD PROCEDURES; _
E
Site Health and Safety
Field work performed by Quorum is conducted in accordance with a Site Safety Plan which
describes the basic safety requirements for the subsurface environmental investigation and
the drilling of soil borings at the work site. The Site Safety Plan is applicable to personnel.
of Quorum and to subcontractors of Quorum. Personnel'ischeduled to work at.the site are
briefed on the contents of the Site Safety Plan before work begins. A copy of the Site
Safety Plan is kept at the work site and is available for ieference by appropriate parties.
The staff geologist of Quorum is the Site Safety Officer.u
Field Instruments 4
Quorum Environmental Consultants, Inc. uses a photoiomzation:detector (PID) in the field
to screen samples for laboratory analysis and to make general evaluations of the extent of
hydrocarbon-bearing soil at the site. These instruments measure the total concentration of
ionizable compounds (including hydrocarbons) in vapor emitted from soil or water samples
under ambient field conditions. Variations in soil type, soil temperature, moisture content,
ambient air temperature, and vapor pressures of respective constituents affect the results.
Laboratory analysis involves extraction of hydrocarbons from the sample under controlled
laboratory conditions. As a result, readings obtained with!a PID may not correspond to the
results obtained by laboratory analyses. The geologist must evaluate the relative merit of
the measurements made with a PID and the laboratoiy analyses in light of the field
conditions existing at the site and the differences between field and laboratory methods.
,3
Drilling Methods
i
Before drilling begins, Underground Service Alert is notified of our intent to drill, so that
approximate locations of underground utility lines and structures can be marked. The soil
borings are hand-augered to a depth of 5 feet before,1 drilling began to minimize the
possibility of damaging underground utilities.
The borings are drilled with.a Mobile B-61 or similar drill rig, equipped with 8- or 10-inch-
diameter, continuous flight, hollow-stem augers. The augers are steam-cleaned prior to use
in each boring to minimize the possibility of cross-contamination. .Sampling equipment is
cleaned between uses by washing with Alconox (an industrial soap) and rinsing with clean
tap water.
Soil samples will be collected using a California-modified, split-spoon sampler equipped with
cleaned brass sleeves. During drilling samples will be collected by advancing the auger to
a point immediately above the sampling depth and driving the sampler through the auger
into the native soil. The sampler will be driven 18 inchesor to refusal with a standard 140-
pound hammer repeatedly dropped 30 inches. The numlier of blows required to drive the
sampler each successive 6-inch interval will be counted and ,recorded to give an
i _
F
i
ki
;i
