Report on Subsurface Environmental Exploration (Soil Borings) Page 2
A & M Market, 4579 East Acampo Road, Acampo, California November 9, 1992
Quorum Environmental Consultants, Inc., Project 92-120-2
We have concluded that additional removal of hdrocarbon-bearin soil should be
Y 9
performed by excavation in the west side of the cavity and extending west to the soil
borings B-2 and B-3 l A ramp should be constructed for equipment access, and the work
should be performed quickly because localized soil may slough, the work must be done
during the rainy season, and the Client wishes to return the site to full operation The soil
should be aerated and used to backfill the excavation when hydrocarbons have been
reduced to acceptable levels
2.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES
The purpose of this phase of work at the A & M Market was to continue delineation of
gasoline contamination in the subsurface soil Sav-Mor Oil Company requested the work
because hydrocarbons were encountered in soil during removal of three underground
storage tanks from the subsurface of the site Accordingly, the following scope of
services, which was described in the Work Plan (see References) dated July 3, 1992, and
which is strictly limited to the items listed below, was completed for this phase of the
project The work actually performed is described in the text, and standard protocols for
field and laboratory procedures are discussed in Appendix C
The reported work included the following tasks
1 Obtaining the necessary authorization from representatives of the appropriate
agencies to proceed with this scope of services
2 Acquiring the appropriate permit from the San Joaquin County Public Health
Services, Environmental Health Division, for advancing soil bonngs onsite
3 Notifying Underground Services Alert at least 48 hours prior to drilling to identify
public utilities at the site
4. Planning necessary safety equipment and procedures and implementing a site-
specific Safety Plan for field work
5 Observing the drilling of four soil borings to a depth of approximately 40 feet below
the existing ground surface or until two consecutive samples showed no indication
of hydrocarbon contamination. The maximum depth of the borings was to be the
ground-water surface This was estimated to be 60 feet below grade based on
information provided by Sari Joaquin County personnel The four soil borings
designated B-1 through B-4 were to be drilled next to the tank cavity on the north,
west, and south sides where hydrocarbons had been identified in the soil in
previous studies
