The length and <br /> diameter of the UST was measured and recorded. In addition, the <br /> UST was inspected for holes, rust, and other physical evidence that <br /> would suggest the potential for leakage. Finally, the UST <br /> i r <br /> excavation was inspected for the presence of petroleum product <br /> odor, soil discoloration, and groundwater. The excavation for the <br /> UST was approximately 172 feet east of Industrial Way and 12 feet <br /> south of the northern fence line. <br /> Three soil samples -were collected from the excavation by Mr. <br /> Ken Jones, Twining' s staff geologist, after removal of the USTs on <br /> � r June 9, 1992 . The soil samples were .collected from a depth of <br /> is <br /> approximately eleven feet below site grade. Location and depth of <br /> the soil samples were specified by Mr. William R. Snavely, San <br /> Joaquin County Health Department on-site representative. The soil <br /> samples were collected after a backhoe bucket removed soil from the <br /> excavation. To obtain '.a soil sample from the backhoe bucket, a <br /> clean brass sleeve was pushed into the soil. After collection of <br /> soil, the ends of the brass sleeve was covered with Teflon tape <br /> and fitted with plastic caps. The brass sleeve was then labeled, <br /> placed -into a plastic bag, and immediately placed on blue ice for <br /> shipment to Twining's state certified laboratory. <br /> Groundwater was observed to be seeping into the bottom of the <br /> excavation after removal of the tank.
