TREADWELL & ROLLO
C A sample drawn from plumbing on municipal or domestic wells must be taken at
the access valve closest to the well and upstream of any water softening or
chlorination input
D The sample container and cap will be laboratory prepared containers. The
container will then be filled to overflowing (except when sampling for
bacteriological analysis or when chemical preservatives have been added to the
sample container) to avoid trapping air at the top of the container Splashing of
the water in the sample container and exposure to the atmosphere will be
mimmuzed during sampling A container cap will be screwed on tightly
immediately after filling the sample container Samples for volatile organics
analysis (VOA) will be collected in duplicate in VOA bottles and checked to be
sure no headspace is present in the sample container Sample preservation
procedures are presented below in Section 2 5
E Where more than one well within a specific field or site is to be sampled, the
sampling sequence will begin with the well having the least suspected
contamination Successive samples will be obtained from wells of increasing
suspected contamination If the relative degree of suspected contamination at
each well cannot be reasonably assumed, sampling will proceed from the
perimeter of the site towards the center of the site The sampling sequence will be
arranged such that wells are sampled in order of increasing proximity to the
suspected source of contamination
F A map will be used in the field to record sample locations A field log book or
data sheets will be used to record the following information
o Sample number/name
o Date and time sampled
o Sample location (well number)
o Depth at which sample was taken
o Conditions of source (flowing, pumping, etc )
o Extraordinary circumstances (if any)
o Name of collector
a Results of field measurements (temperature, pH, specific conductance)
2.2 Sample Filtration
When the analysis of metals in the groundwater is required, field filtration of each
sample will be performed using a 0 45 micron filter and filter press, prior to transferring
the sample to the sample container and preserving it with nitric acid Alternatively, the
• A-2
110707{}9 PJC 1 April 1994
