• PROTOCOL FOR MONITORING INTRINSIC BIOREMEDIATION
IN GROUNDWATER
I. INTRODUCTION
It is now understood that a wide variety of hydrocarbons dissolved in groundwater will
biodegrade, without artificial enhancement, due to the presence of indigenous microbes. The
demonstration of "intrinsic bioremediation" requires multiple Imes of evidence, including- (1)
demonstration of contamuiant losses and (2) evidence that bioremediation is actually realized in
the field (NRC 1993). The objective of this Protocol is to assist in the demonstration of intrinsic
bioremediation. The Protocol provides guidance for monitoring intrinsic bioremediation of
petroleum hydrocarbons dissolved in groundwater. The Protocol recommends sampling for
indicator parameters used to demonstrate intrinsic bioremediation at field sites. The success of
demonstrating intrinsic bioremediation depends on the availability of biological indicator data
and the sampling techniques used to generate this data.
Table I summarizes the Groundwater Analytical Protocol including the recommended indicator
parameters, the methods used for measurement (field or lab), and a brief description of the
sample volume and preservation techruques.
The recommended indicator parameters are summarized below and described in more detail in
Section II.
dissolved oxygen
oxidation-reduction potential
pH
conductivity
temperature
alkahmty
nitrate
sulfate
ferrous iron
This List represents the starting point for a groundwater samplirig program to demonstrate
intrinsic bioremediation
The selection of monitoring wells to include in this type of program is a site-specific decision.
For this evaluation to be meaningful, the minimum number of wells should include an upgradient
(uncontaminated) well, at least one well in the dissolved plume, and one well downgradient of
the dissolved plume (uncontaminated) Morutonng wells containing free product are not
routinely sampled for dissolved contaminants and should not be included in the evaluation of
intrinsic bioremediation Three or more wells along the direction of groundwater flow are useful
in the evaluation of intrinsic bioremediation After reviewing the results of the initial sampling
1
