Mr. Rich Wilson
November 2, 1998
Page 2
Soil boring(B-1) was advanced to a total depth of 51.5 feet below ground surface (bgs)
for the collection of soil samples and a groundwater-grab sample. Soil boring(B-2) was
drilled to a total depth of 21.5 feet bgs for soil sampling only.
At five-foot intervals in both borings, soil samples were collected in 2-inch diameter
brass sleeves using a modified California split-spoon sampler. Mr. Christopher M.
Palmer(CEG 41262) logged each of the soil samples for hydrogeologic and lithologic
characteristics according to the Unified Soil Classification System and screened the
samples for volatile organic vapors using an organic vapor monitor, equipped with a
photoionization detector(PID). The soil samples were sealed with Teflon° sheets and
plastic end caps, labeled, logged onto chain-of-custody forms and placed in a chilled ice
chest.
Groundwater was encountered in B-1 at a depth of approximately 45 feet bgs. From B-1,
a groundwater-grab sample was collected with a dedicated and disposable bailer and
laboratory-supplied containers. The groundwater-grab sample was labeled, logged onto
chain-of-custody forms and placed in a chilled ice chest. Upon completion of the soil and
groundwater-grab sampling, both boreholes were sealed with neat cement.
The soil and groundwater-grab samples were transported under chain-of-custody
documentation to Chromalab, Inc., a state of California certified hazardous waste testing
laboratory. Chromalab analyzed the soil sample collected at 15 feet bgs from B-1 and the
groundwater-grab sample collected from B-1 for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)-
as Jet A, TPH-as-Aviation Gasoline, TPH-as-Kerosene, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene
and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020/8015M.
Results of the Investigation
In general, the soil beneath the site consists of silt and clay mixtures with only minor
sand to a depth of approximately 45 feet bgs. Sandy soil was encountered at a depth of
45 feet bgs and extended to the total depth of the borehole B-1 (51.5 feet bgs). Saturated
soil and groundwater was first encountered in B-I at a depth of approximately 45 feet
bgs. Soil boring logs are attached.
Based on the investigation results, subsurface soil and groundwater in the vicinity of the
USTs has not been impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. Concentrations of TPH-as Jet
A, TPH-as-Aviation Gasoline, TPH-as-Kerosene, and BTEX were not detected above
reporting limits in both the soil and groundwater-grab sample. The laboratory report and
chain-of-custody documents are attached.
