KLEIRIFELDER
installed during the time of operation. Under the approval of the RWQCB the crops,
which received the irrigation water were monitored with MW-1 (southeast of Pond 7 and
background) and MW-2 (southwest of Pond 7 and downgradient). The groundwater
flow direction at the site was documented as flowing to the southwest (e.g., Report of
Wastewater Discharge, and Groundwater Monitoring Events). Groundwater monitoring
was conducted up to 2001.
The groundwater flow and quality was summarized in a memo prepared by Ms. Lindsey
MacDonald of the RWQCB on December 21, 2001. The groundwater was
characterized as flowing to the southwest and although elevated concentrations of most
analytes in the wells located near the ponds on the west side of Airport Road (Ponds 1-
6), "significantly lower concentrations" were noted in wells 1, 2, and 5 located near the
land application areas (east of Airport Road). The memo stated that the concentrations
of each analyte in MW-1 and MW-2 are much lower versus the monitoring wells located
west of Airport Road near Ponds 1-6.
Prior to the closure of Suprema Specialties West, Inc. and following the Third Quarter
2001, the groundwater monitoring results showed a notable decrease in the TDS and
EC concentrations in MW-1 and MW-2. The groundwater analysis completed in 2001
indicated the following:
Analyte MW-1 MW-2
TDS 270 mg/L 230 rng/L
EC 340 umhos/cm 300 umhos/cm
Chloride 9.3 mg/L 6.1 mg/L
Sodium 67 mg/L 24 mg/L
Nitrate as nitrogen ND 0.2 mg/L
Fixed dissolved Solids 210 mg/L 180 mg/L
Based on the results of the groundwater monitoring conducted between 2000 and 2001
the concentrations of most analytes were markedly lower in wells MWA and MW-2
versus the facility monitoring wells located west of the pond and sprayfield. For
instance, the nitrate concentrations ranged from <0.1 mg/L to 36 mg/L in the wells
located at the facility west of Pond No. 7 and the concentrations in MWA and MW-2
ranged from <0.1 mg/L to 2.0 mg/L.
No further groundwater monitoring was conducted and the facility permit to discharge
waste was rescinded since 2001. The bottom of Pond No. 7 is currently estimated to
be approximately 8 to 10-feet below the final grade of the site. The area around the
former pond has been typically agricultural and ranching. Dairy facilities were also
common in the area which may account for nitrate and associated constituents in
groundwater in the area.
Pulte Homes is currently developing the area, which includes the former Pond No. 7,
into the Del Webb Woodbridge community. Pulte has voluntarily approached the
RWQCB to clarify and characterize the present condition at the pond area. The
RWQCB has requested that Pulte provide this workplan for the testing of the residual
waste in the former pond area and for investigating groundwater.
59830.H02/STO6R1055/JDZ:Iv Page 2 of 5
©2006 Kleinfelder, Inc.
