C 1
HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
Pacific Gas and Electric Cor pany is dedicated to ensuring that its employees and contractors work
1 within a safe and healthy environment at potentially hazardous sites. All field personnel working on the
project will be SARA-traine;i-(Hazardous Waste Site Operations 40-hour training class). This Health
I and Safety Plan is prepared in accordance with 29 CFA 1910.126 and will be implemented during the
soil and groundwater sampling portions of the remediation project described in this workplan. The
requirements, specifications.;and procedures presented in this plan will apply to all on-site personnel
involved in this investigatioil including employees, contractors and sub-cantractors,site visitors, and
regulatory agency personnel
KEY PERSONNEL
The Site Safety Officer/Project Manager will provide necessary raining to site personnel involved in the
proposed field activities in the use of safety and personal protection equipment and will manage the on-site
monitoring program. The Site Safety Officer/Project Manager will have the authority to deny access to any
individual without the proper, training, medical release,or protective equipment required for the site
conditions or those individuals disregarding site safety procedures. All site personnel will be under the
direction of the Site Safety 0fficer/Project Manager. The Site Safety OfficerlProject Manager for this
project at PG&E`s McMullin;Gas Dehydrator Station is Darrell Klingman (phone: $10-866-5883,
pager: 510-448-3623)or Eric:Johnson(phone: 510-866-5888, pager: 51 539-1910),
HAZARD A1VALYUS
The activities addressed by alis health and safety plan include soil sampling while conducting exploratory
soil borings, well installatimand development, and the collection of groundwater samples from monitoring
wells. Although exposure to chemical contaminants at hazardous levels is very unlikely, these activities
present a remote potential foj+exposure to potentially hazardous substances via ingestion, dermal contact,
and inhalation. For this Health and Safety Plan, the chemicals of concern are petroleum hydrocarbon
compounds(e.g.,gasoline and diesel-range hydrocarbons)and aromatic compounds(e.g.,benzene,toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylenes).
The most significant risk associated with the compounds at the site is exposure to aromatic compounds.
Skin contact will be eliminated by use of clothing and gloves. The inhalation hazard will be minimized by
402331-9863 g_1
