Notification #1600-2018-0116-R3
Streambed Alteration Agreement
wants to remove core from a conventional core drill, the entire core barrel has to be
removed from the hole. SPT samples are taken before the empty punch-core barrel is
inserted into the drill rod. SPT sampling requires driving a thick-walled sample tube, with
an outside diameter of two inches and an inside diameter of 1.4 inches, and a length of
approximately 25.6 inches. This tube is driven into the ground at the desired sampling
interval inside the mud-rotary drilled borehole casing by a slide hammer with a weight of
140 lbs., free falling a distance of 30 inches. The tube is driven 18 inches into the
ground or until hammer refusal.
A barge will be needed to perform the proposed geotechnical drilling operation in the
Stockton Deepwater Channel. The barge and drill rig and equipment aboard will be
towed to the Stockton Channel Viaduct drill site by a Caltrans 16-foot steel-hulled
Boston Whaler boat powered by a 90-horsepower four-cycle outboard motor or similar
vessel. The boat will be used throughout the barge work to maneuver the barge to the
boring locations and to transport people and equipment. In addition to the Boston
Whaler boat, a small 10 foot Zodiac raft powered with a 10 HP four cycle engine or a
similar type of boat may be used to transport people and small supplies. It is expected
that the barge would be assembled, equipped, and launched from a marina facility at
the Stockton Deepwater Channel (from 5-Star marina on north side of channel or from
either Stockton Downtown Marina or Morelli Park on the south side of the Channel).
No removal of perennial woody riparian vegetation will be required for barge access or
staging. A barge typically consists of nine sections, and each section typically is 6 feet
x 15 feet, giving the barge an overall size of 18 feet x 45 feet. The barge will support a
Christensen 500 trailer rig with dimensions of 8 feet x 22 feet with a weight of 12,000
lbs., a Mobile B-47 rig with dimensions of 8 feet x 17 feet with a weight of 11,000 lbs,, or
a similar type of drill rig and a SPT rig. In addition to the drill rigs, the support equipment
including crane, crew cab with trailer, one or two Caltrans vehicles will need to be on
site (but not on the barge) to support the barge work. A barge typically is anchored to
(tied against) the existing piers to be kept stationary during drilling at each drilling
location. In addition, four (4) anchors (one at each corner of the barge) typically are
used for additional stabilization. Buoys with reflective tape will be attached to the anchor
ropes for nighttime visibility purposes to designate anchor lines just beneath the water
surface.
The placement of four borings within the San Joaquin River will temporarily impact 3.14
square feet (0.00007 acres) of the riverbed.
PROJECT IMPACTS
Existing fish or wildlife resources the project could substantially adversely affect include:
• Chinook Salmon (spring-run) (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), State-listed as
Endangered
• Chinook Salmon (fall-run and late-fall-run) (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), State
Species of Special Concern
