M 1
PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY r. Z
JOGI KHANNA M.D.,M.P.H.
Health Officer
4CIFORN
P.O. Box 2009 • (1601 East Hazelton Avenue) • Stockton,California 95201
(209) 468-3400
TO: Ton Vorster, Senior Engineer
S9" (0pCentral Valley Regional Water Quality Control Bo
FROM: Fred Kaufman, REHS, Program Manager
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
DATE: January 17, 1990
RE: 14318 S. Airport Way, Manteca, CA
Our division is becoming increasingly concerned regarding the operations at the above
referenced site. I have enclosed a letter from the South San Joaquin Irrigation District
regarding pollution of an adjoining irrigation drain with whey. We have on previous
occasions found evidence of this type of discharge to the drain and have reported this to
CVRWQCB. We have also responded to complaints regarding odors emanating from a
waste pond across the road which receives drainage from the ponds located at the site.
Our concern is two-fold. We understand that since the cheese plant has acquired new
management, they intend to expand the volume. Also we have reason to suspect that the
Chiron Corporation next door discharges drainage to these same ponds. Since Chiron is
an industrial operation, we question the quality of the discharge.
I have enclosed a copy of a newspaper article which raised our concern regarding industrial
discharges.
Should you have any questions regarding this matter, contact me at (209)468-3426.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services 0
