STATE OF CALIFORNIA GEORGE DEUKMEJIAN.Governor
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD—
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3443 ROUTIER ROAD
SACRAMENTO,CA 95827-3098 `D I f= d !J
u
OCT 1
14 October 1987
4
ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH
FERMIT/SERVICES
Mr. Gerry DeGroot
The Wind Shop Co.
14138 S. Airport Way
Manteca, CA 95336
RECENT INSPECTION OF CHIRON CORPORATION AND DE GROOT'S CHEESE PLANT AND DAIRY,
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
On 16 June 1987, Bill Snavely, Beth Ambacher and I inspected your facility and
that of Chiron Corporation to determine if a Report of Waste Discharge (RWD) was
needed. After extensive testing of Chiron's, the cheese plant's, and the dairy's
wastewater (results enclosed) we have concluded that this wastewater does not
pose a threat to water quality and a RWD will, therefore, not be necessary.
Chiron's wastewater (5,000 gal/day) is presently being treated by a reverse
osmosis (R.O. ) unit which can remove up to 99% of the total dissolved solids
(i.e., copper) . We also tested the wastewater for priority pollutants using EPA
Test Methods 624 and 625. No priority pollutants were detected.
The wastewaters from the cheese plant and the dairy were analysed for nitrogen,
COD and minerals. Our Agricultural Unit determined that the acreage of cropland
at the dairy was adequate to utilize nutrients from the combined waste load and
that this land also has the capacity to assimilate the salt loading (memorandum
enclosed) .
Should further investigation reveal a potential water quality problem, we will
proceed with formulation of waste discharge requirements.
STEPHEN S.
