M e m o r a n d u m V
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3443 Routier Road Phone: (916) 361-5600
Sacramento, CA 95827-3098 ATSS 8-495-5600
TO: Stephen Boll FROM: Louis Pratt
Associate Engineer Land and Water Use Analyst
DATE: 21 September 1987 SIGNATURE:
SUBJECT: WASTE LOADING AT DEGR00T DAIRY
I have reviewed the file on the subject dairy and have made calculations on
nitrogen and salt loading to cropland from animal waste and cheese processing
waste. On the basis of the information provided, it appears that the acreage of
cropland at the dairy is adequate to utilize nutrient from the combined waste
load and also has the capacity to assimilate the salt loading. Calculations for
the waste loading are as follows:
930 Animal Units (AU) x .4 lbs N/AU/day x .5 loss x .75 crop recovery x 365
days = 50,918 lbs N available to crops.
Nitrogen test levels vary considerably on the cheese processing waste stream.
Using the highest figure available and not allowing for N loss:
120 mg/1 = .001 lbs N/gal x 20,000 gals x 365 days = 7,300 lbs N available
for crops.
Salt loading from animal waste is calculated:
930 AU x 2.2 lbs TDS/head/day x 365 days = 746,790 lbs TDS/year.
Salt loading from the cheese processing waste is calculated:
3,200 mg/l = .027 lbs TDS/gal x 20,000 gal x 365 days = 197, 100 lbs
TDS/year.
N TDS
Animal Waste 50,918 746,790
Cheese Processing Waste 7,300 197,100
Total 58,218 lbs 943,890 lbs
The acreage given for waste application is 250, which is double cropped with
corn and oats. Therefore:
58,218 lbs N/250 acres = 233 lbs N/acre/year. Approximately 315 lbs
N/acre/year can be utilized by double crop. Salt loading of 943,890 lbs
TDS/250 acres = 3,776 lbs TDS/acre/year.
LFP:sg
