December 14, 1990 <br /> 202/029000-390 Page 7 <br /> 7.3 SOIL SAMPLING <br /> Subsequent to the construction of the soil treatment cells, several composite samples will be <br /> collected so that the initial contaminant concentrations (soil characterization) can be determined. The <br /> samples collected will initially be analyzed for gasoline, diesel, and motor-oil constituents, chlorinated <br /> hydrocarbons and metals to adequately characterize contaminant concentrations in the soil. One soil <br /> sample per 100 yard' may be sufficient for this purpose, however, the exact sampling frequency will be <br /> determined by SJCEHD requirements. The soil samples will be collected with a hand-held drive sampler <br /> from greater than 3 feet below the surface of the treatment cell. Samples will be collected in brass tubes, <br /> the ends of which will be sealed with foil and plastic caps. The samples will be stored on ice and then <br /> transported with a Chain-of-Custody Manifest to a State-certified laboratory. <br /> At the same time that the Initial soil samples are collected, samples will also be collected for <br /> quantification and optimization of hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria levels. Optional pH and soil moisture levels <br /> will also be determined for operational process control. These samples will be collected in sterilized sample <br /> tubes in the same manner as the previous samples. The samples will be analyzed by a State-certified <br /> bioremediation laboratory. <br /> The site will be visited by Groundwater Technology personnel every week during the course of the <br /> project,to ensure that the blowers are functioning properly and that the polyethylene covers remain in place. <br /> The moisture of the treatment cells will be monitored periodically,and nutrients will be reapplied if required. <br /> One sample per 200 yard'will be collected halfway through the project from the original locations <br /> and analyzed for motor-oil, pH, soil moisture, and hydrocarbon-utilizing bacterial levels in order to monitor <br /> the progress of remediation. Samples will be collected again at the end of the project to verify remediation <br /> results. For closure purposes, one sample per 50 yard' of soil will be collected and analyzed in the final <br /> sampling round. Samples will be collected and analyzed as previously described. Upon approval of the <br /> closure request by the governing regulatory agencies, and removal or replacement of the soil by the client, <br /> the site will be returned to its original condition. <br /> 8.0 TIME LINE <br /> A proposed time line for the project is presented in Appendix B. Groundwater Technology estimates <br /> it will take approximately 75 to 120 days to complete this project. The time line is based upon a 120 day <br /> treatment period. This estimate is derived from current site knowledge and optimum treatment conditions, <br /> along with Groundwater Technology's previous experience with motor-oil contaminants, and estimates of <br /> concentrations in the soil.
