n YM.tti I I o v' X}
July 30, 1990
M E M O R A N D U M
TO: David Irey, Deputy District Attorney
1W
FROM: Dennis L. Fields, Hazardous Materials Specialist
SUBJECT: POSSIBLE ILLEGAL DISCHARGE OF MURIATIC ACID AND
HYDROCARBONS AT EARTH GRAIN'S BAKERY AT 2651 S. AIRPORT
WAY, STOCKTON
On July 27, 1990, 1 was performing a hazardous materials inspection at
Earth Grain's Bakery . I was accompanied by Mr. Sam Martinez and Ms. Lynn
Wright of Earth Grain's. During the inspection I found the following:
1 . A pool of liquid approximately 45 feet long and about 2 feet at the
widest point. The liquid had a pH of 0. The company claimed a contractor
had cleaned out a machine with muriatic acid and let the acid drain onto
the asphalt.
2. A sump located by the old fueling area has a liquid having a pH of 4.
3. An earthen storm drain ditch, approximately 250 yards long, looks as
if it is contaminated by hydrocarbons (oils & fuels). There is a concrete
vault at the head of the ditch. The vault appears to be the meeting point
for all of the storm drains from the bakery which then flows into the
ditch.
