v
must have released the acid onto the asphalt. Mr. Egar said he wouldjaa
his people out to clean the acid up. I told him it was now considerehazardous waste and I would have to notify Local Environmental Healthclean up directions. Mr. Egar said he would have to contact the p
manager Mr. Chuck Hufstetler.
A key was located so Mr. Martinez, Ms. Wright, Mr. Egar, Mr. Hufstetler and
myself went over to the storm drain ditch. At the ditch I could smell
hydrocarbons (oil & fuels). You could also see signs of contamination,
weeds had sucked the hydrocarbons up into the plant, the soil was darker
where the hydrocarbons had settled and a oily sheen was on the water.
There is a concrete vault at the head of the storm drain. The vault appears
to be the meeting point of all the storm drain lines leaving the bakery.
All parties involved moved over to the pool of acid. I explained to Mr.
Hufstetler that I found the pool to have a pH of 0. Mr. Hufstetler proceeded
to tell me that he was a Mirco-Biologist and they was no pH of 0. 1 then
gave him pH paper and let him test the liquid. He did admit the liquid was
very acidic.
We then went into Mr. Hufstetler office so I could call Local Environmental
Health to send someone out for clean up procedures. I spoke with Ms.
Heran who informed me Tish Resch would responded to the scene.
When Ms. Resch arrived, all parties walked out to the ditch. Ms. Resch
agreed with me on the hydrocarbon contamination. The ditch runs
approximately 250 yards with contamination all along the ditch.
We then walked over to the acid pool. Ms. Resch used pH paper and
confirmed the material to be an acidic liquid. Mr. Hufstetler requested
from Ms. Resch to allow his company to apply baking soda to naturalized.
Ms. Resch agreed to this plan. I suggested that personnel doing the clean
up use protective clothing and face pieces with acid vapor cartridges. The
pool of acid liquid was being to give off acid vapors as the day was
getting hotter.
