DEC 0 8 2016
DEPARTMENT
Hazardous Waste Guidelines (ALL Stores)
Instructor Notes:
Review all tailgates before meeting. During meeting, paraphrase main points, define topic.
Follow-Up Questions:
1. Where should containers be stored and what should be on if the container is not actively being used?
2. What should you do with Empty Drums?
3. What information is required for waste labels?
4. Have you shipped your hazardous waste in the last 90 days?
Container Management:
• All hazardous waste containers must be securely closed at all times unless you are adding or
removing waste from the container. This means: lids secure on drums, lids secure on tanks or any
other containers when you are not filling them!
• Hazardous waste containers need to be clearly marked with hazardous waste labels. All containers of
materials should be labeled! (Provided by your waste vendor or the EHS department) This includes:
1) The name of the waste. (Used Oil for example)
2) The date you started filling the container (accumulation start date)
3)The type of hazard the waste presents (flammable, toxic, other etc)
4)Your facilities name and address and phone number.
5)The phrase"Hazardous Waste" (If located in CA)
6)Your facilities CAL EPA Id number(If located in CA)
7)The CA Waste Code (oil: 221, Oily absorbent: 223, Brake Fluid: 343)
8)The physical state: solid or liquid
9) All of this should be on a yellow hazardous waste label(If in CA).
• Hazardous waste containers should always be stored off the bare ground. Store on pallets or on
t
paved surfaces.
• Hazardous waste containers need to be stored where rain cannot come into contact with them. (in a
building or tarped)
• No hazardous waste should be on a site for more than 90 days EVER! After 60 days since the
accumulation start date, contact your hazardous waste vendor to arrange disposal.
