6 . 2 Chemical Storage Areas
6 . 2. 1 Chemical Stores
The Chemical Stores area is a covered materials storage
facility with two storage areas separated by a 6" berm.
Acids are stored in one area, and bases in the other.
The entire area is also surrounded by 6" berms with a
sloping concrete floor. The floor slopes backward to two
sumps , one in each storage area. Spills are normally
washed to these sumps , which are plumbed to the WPS .
6 . 2 . 2 Flammables Storage Area
This is a covered area with a sloping asphalt floor.
Spills may be recovered or absorbed with solid absorbent
(e.g. Super-Cel ) and packaged for disposal .
6 . 2 . 3 Dry Chemical Storage
This area is also covered, with two storage spaces
separated by a 4 ' wall . The entire area is also
surrounded by 6" berms with a concrete floor. There is
no drain; spills are normally swept up and either
disposed of or treated, depending on the material
spilled. In the unlikely event of a wet spill , a wet-vac
may be used to clean up the liquid or slurry.
6 . 2. 4 Wastewater Pretreatment Facility (WPF)
This area has concrete coated curbs to contain spills
from any process vessel or pipe within the facility. The
floor is concrete and slopes to sumps in each containment
area. Spills are normally washed to the sumps and pumped
to the WPS or batch treated as necessary.
6 . 2.5 Drum Storage Areas
This area is asphalt covered and slopes towards a sump in
the rear of the yard area. Spills may be recovered,
washed to the sump and processed through waste treatment,
or absorbed with solid absorbent ( e.g . Super-Cel ) and
packaged for disposal , depending on the composition and
severity of the spill .
6. 2. 6 Plating Shop
The plating shop floor slopes to a sump; both the floor
and sump are protected with a FRP coating. Spills flow
to the sump, either with or without dilution (rinse)
water and are pumped to a receiving tank in the WPF for
treatment. Employees are protected from contact with
spilled chemicals by working platforms above floor level.
