BoReTec"
transmission fluid, drained oil from motor oil filters, air compressor oil, and power
steering oils can be mixed together.
Parts cleaning solutions, oils contaminated with parts cleaning solution, brake
fluid, antifreeze, gasoline, freon, oil sludge, skimmer oil, kitty litter, parts cleaner
sludge, chiller, air conditioning, or refrigeration compressor oil should be stored
separately.
• All equipment used to remove the oil from motor pits must be marked with the
words "Used Oil Tool — Empty After Each Use". This includes all pumps, the
drum used to transfer the oil from the pit to the accumulation area, and the filter
assembly. The tools must not be used to store oil; they should be emptied as
soon as practical — no later than the end of the tour on which they are used.
• If a container is used for accumulation of used oil:
The used oil container must be a metal 55 -gallon bung -type drum in good
condition and must be kept closed except when adding or removing used
oil. The container must be compatible with oil (e.g., a container that
previously held oil).
2. The label must contain the words "Used Oil.
3. Keep the container closed at all times except when filling or emptying.
• The milkrun variance - applies to the used oil. Thus, a hazardous waste manifest
is not required for the disposal of used oil. A receipt must be received and
maintained for three years.
USED OIL FILTERS
Used oil filters are exempt from hazardous waste regulations ONLY if they are drained
of free-flowing oil and recycled for their scrap metal value, and meet the following
requirements:
The filters must be drained of free-flowing used oil; this may take up to 12 hours
by gravity feed. If the filter is equipped with a device (such as a rubber flap
located just inside the filter opening) that impedes the drainage of oil from the
filter, that device must be manipulated to allow the oil to exit the filter freely, or
the filter must be punctured, crushed, opened, drained, or otherwise handled in a
manner that will allow the oil to exit the filter. All drained oil collected from the oil
filter should be added to the used oil waste container or tank.
The drained filters must be accumulated, stored, and transferred in a rainproof
container that is capable of containing any oil that may separate from the filters.
Keep this container covered and closed at all times when not in use. During
transfer, containers must be sealed so that when they are laid on their sides, no
oil will leak out. The filters must be transported to a smelter or other scrap metal
processor for recycling, or to a storage or consolidation facility that subsequently
transfers them to such a recycler.
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 125
