BoReTech)m Some manufactures have substituted propylene for ethylene glycol. Propylene glycol does not have the same toxicity characteristics of ethylene glycol, but it can dissolve metals in the engine at regulatory hazardous waste levels. • Waste antifreeze should be stored in an appropriately labeled hazardous waste container. • Waste antifreeze must be recycled. An approved waste disposal/recycling firm that handles antifreeze should be contacted for assistance. • Milkrun variance manifest procedures may be used for waste antifreeze. • Oil should not be mixed with antifreeze. If oil is mixed with antifreeze, manage this waste separately. Do not skim off oil using an oil -absorbing sock. • The disposal company may have a milkrun variance manifest. This allows the use of a bill of lading or hazardous waste manifest for disposal. A copy of the milkrun agreement should be obtained from the hazardous waste hauler. If the hauler does not have a milkrun, the antifreeze must be shipped under a hazardous waste manifest. In California, the following additional requirements apply: • Use drain pans large enough to catch all spillage from vehicles. Drain pans must be labeled "Used Antifreeze Only". Keep used antifreeze as clean as possible. Use a pump to minimize danger of splashing and spillage when transferring from drain pan to the used antifreeze storage container and transfer it as soon as possible after draining the vehicle or before the end of the work shift. • Designated personnel must keep a log of all recycling activity and copies of receipts at each garage. Original receipt should be placed in a binder for record keeping. SOLVENTS AND DEGREASERS Solvents and degreasers are used in cleaning parts and machinery and must be managed as a hazardous waste unless tested by an approved vendor and determined to be non -hazardous. • If suspected to be hazardous, a representative sample of the spent solvents and degreasers must be profiled/tested by your local waste disposal/recycling vendor. Once this profiling is completed, it does not need to be repeated each time additional waste solvents and degreasers need to be disposed, as long as this new waste is similar to that previously tested. • If hazardous, waste solvents and degreasers must be stored in an appropriately labeled hazardous waste container and placed in secondary containment. • Do not add liquids or oils to the solvents and degreasers. • Hazardous waste solvents and degreasers must be transported by a registered transporter to an authorized hazardous waste treatment facility for recycling.
