BoReTech'
,s
• A hazardous waste manifest must be completed when transporting the waste.
SOLVENT -BASED PARTS WASHERS
This section applies to solvent -based parts washers. The following requirements apply
to satellite accumulation and disposal of spent parts washer solvent once the spent
solvent is removed from the washer.
• The spent solvent container must be a 33 -gallon bung -type drum container in
good condition and must be kept closed except when adding or removing waste.
The container must be compatible with solvent (e.g., a container that previously
held this solvent).
• The area of accumulation for the spent solvent should be located under the parts
washer at the point where the spent solvent is generated. However, if the vendor
does not pick up the spent solvent directly from the parts washer, the drum
(when full) must be removed by facility personnel and placed in the hazardous
waste storage area or cabinet.
• Do not add liquids or oils to the solvents and degreasers.
LEAD -ACID BATTERIES
Because of the lead and acid content, spent lead -acid batteries of 6 volts or more are
considered hazardous waste, and include automotive batteries and most emergency
light batteries. Batteries must not be drained before shipment for off-site reclamation.
However, to encourage the recycling of spent lead -acid batteries, California has
developed special provisions for their handling as long as the batteries will ultimately be
reused, reclaimed, or recycled. Disposal of spent lead -acid batteries in landfills is not
allowed.
Exemption
A person who generates in one year, stores at one time, or transports at one time in one
vehicle 10 or fewer spent batteries that have been removed from motor vehicles or are
equivalent in type and equivalent to, or smaller in size than, such batteries is exempt
from managing those batteries as hazardous waste provided that the batteries are
transferred to a person who recycles, uses, reuses, or reclaims the batteries or who
stores them for eventual management in that manner.
Procedure for Intact Spent Lead -Acid Batteries:
• Check lead -acid battery for damage or determine if the battery can hold a
charge. If damaged or cannot hold a charge, the battery is not to be reused and
becomes a waste.
• Intact, spent lead -acid batteries and properly -contained damaged batteries must
be marked with either the date the battery was taken out of service or the date it
was received for transport/storage; the date must be written in a weather -
resistant ink or paint and be legible and conspicuous.
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 128
