BoReTech)
manufactured for subsequent reuse, or they may be re -used on-site provided the
material being placed in the container is compatible with the hazardous material
previously held and the original product label is removed or painted over.
Undamaged 55 -gallon drums must be returned immediately to the vendor to
recover the core charge.
• Records must be kept for containers larger than five gallons indicating the name,
address, and telephone number of the facility used to dispose the empty
containers. A bill of lading or receipt can be used to satisfy this requirement.
These records must be kept for three years.
AEROSOL CANS
Aerosol spray paint cans are not considered hazardous as long as they have been
emptied completely. If there is still paint and pressure inside, they must be handled as
hazardous waste, due to both the paint and the flammable pressurized gas. It is not
acceptable to empty the contents in order to dispose of the can.
Aerosol containers are considered empty if nothing is released when the spray
button is fully depressed and can be managed as a non -hazardous waste (i.e., in
the regular trash). However, it cannot be considered a non -hazardous waste if
the container previously held materials regulated as an acutely or extremely
hazardous waste (40 CFR 261.7). Most aerosol products used by Boretech (such
as paints and lubricants) are not expected to fall under this category. If the
contents are unknown, consult the Boretech Facility Manager.
• Empty aerosol cans can be recycled with the scrap metal by placing them in the
aerosol can crusher that automatically crushes the can and captures the
propellant inside. When the can is full, it should not be crushed, but rather stored
separately as a hazardous waste. Contact the Boretech Facility Manager if this
situation arises.
• If the spray nozzle is clogged, first try to clean it or find another nozzle that does
work. If the can is still full, it may need to be managed as a hazardous waste.
• Waste aerosol containers must be stored separately from other waste streams.
• Boretech may puncture and drain aerosol cans only if using equipment certified
by the DTSC Office of Pollution Prevention and Technology Development.
EMPTY COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS
When disposing a compressed gas cylinder, there are three types of disposal options:
(1) if partially full or empty, return the gas cylinder to its original manufacturer and/or the
gas supplier, (2) if empty take the empty cylinder to a scrap metal recycler, and (3) in
the case of a gas cylinder that has no labels or identifiable marking, be sure to call in a
specialist to dispose of the cylinder properly.
• DISPOSAL OPTION #1: Because compressed gas cylinders are considered
valuable, manufacturers and suppliers are very interested in their recovery. Once
a gas cylinder is empty, contact the supplier to pick it up.
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 131
