BoReTec" <br />• Flammable fume or gases <br />Chemicals which, when mixed with each other, can react to produce the above hazards <br />are termed "incompatible." They must be stored separately in order to prevent <br />uncontrolled chemical reactivity hazards. For hazardous materials storage, this <br />requirement only applies if containers have a capacity of greater than five pounds or <br />one-half gallon. <br />Incompatible chemicals must be separated from one another by one or more of the <br />following methods: <br />• Distance of at least 20 feet <br />• Use of noncombustible partition extending at least 18 inches above and to the <br />sides <br />• Use of hazardous materials storage cabinets <br />• Use of gas cabinets or exhausted enclosures <br />3.2 General Safeguards <br />The following safeguards shall be implemented and maintained at the facility at all <br />times, as feasible, to ensure safeguards are maintained: <br />• Guard posts or fencing are used to protect tanks, piping, dispensing areas, and <br />use areas from vehicular or forklift traffic <br />• Combustibles are cleared from hazardous materials storage areas <br />• Outdoor storage areas, including tanks, are kept clear of combustible materials <br />and vegetation for a minimum distance of 30 feet <br />• Install a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Hazard diamond on the <br />outside wall of the storage structure or in a clearly visible location near the <br />storage area <br />• Ensure that the Hazardous Materials Storage Area is neat and orderly <br />• Place appropriate spill control supplies at or near each storage area. The <br />supplies must include absorbent materials and personnel protective equipment <br />for employees to respond to an incident <br />• Floors of areas where liquid or solid hazardous materials are dispensed or used <br />are of liquid -tight construction and constructed of noncombustible materials <br />• Smoking is prohibited in rooms or areas, including outdoors, where hazardous <br />materials are stored, dispensed or used. No Smoking is allowed within 25 feet for <br />outdoor areas where hazardous materials are stored and used. <br />• Open flame and other heat -producing equipment are located a safe distance <br />from areas where temperature -sensitive materials, flammable materials, and <br />compressed gases are dispensed, used, or handled <br />Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 15 <br />
