BoReTech)m <br />• Adequate lighting by natural or artificial means is maintained <br />Storage, dispensing, use, and handling areas are secured against unauthorized <br />entry <br />1.3.3 Containers <br />• Keep containers closed at all times except when material is being transferred. <br />Make sure all lids, bungs, and drum straps are secure <br />• Materials must be stored in their original container packaging (can, tote, bucket, <br />drum, sack, etc.) <br />• Place and store containers in a manner that allows emergency personnel and <br />equipment to easily maneuver throughout the area and to allow inspection of <br />each drum or container (a minimum of 3 feet in aisles and between rows of <br />drums/containers) <br />• Before moving a container, ensure that the container has not leaked, and that the <br />container is closed so that it can be transferred safely <br />1.3.4 Hazardous Materials Labeling <br />If hazardous materials are not properly labeled they must be managed as hazardous <br />waste [22 CCR 66261.2(f)]. Individual containers, cartons or packages must be <br />conspicuously marked or labeled in accordance with nationally recognized standards. <br />These standards can be found in the OSHA, Title 29 CFR 1910.1200(f), which require <br />that each container of hazardous chemicals in the workplace be labeled, tagged or <br />marked with the following information: <br />• Identity of the hazardous chemical(s) <br />• Appropriate hazard warnings <br />Labels or tags can be purchased from a safety supply company, or the required <br />information can be marked directly on the container. Chemical name(s) and hazard <br />warnings can be found on the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provided by the supplier when <br />the chemical was purchased. If you cannot locate the SDS, obtain one from the <br />supplier. Place the label, tag or marking in a conspicuous place on the container. <br />Individual stationary process containers can be identified by signs, rather than affixing <br />the label to the container. The following labeling requirements shall be followed: <br />• Signs or labels shall not be obscured or removed <br />• Warnings shall be stated for environmental exposures to a chemical known to the <br />state to cause cancer or to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm <br />[22 CCR Division 2, Chapter 3, Article 6, Section 12601(d)] <br />• Signs shall be in English as a primary language or in symbols <br />• Signs shall be durable.
