BoReTech)m
• Metal shavings and trimmings from machinery equipment
• Paints and paint thinners
• Solvents and degreasers
• Used oil and used oil filters
Note: The wastes listed above may be subject to hazardous waste regulation only if
they are listed hazardous wastes or if they exhibit a hazardous waste characteristic; for
example, not all paints and cleaning fluids are automatically hazardous waste.
2.2.2 Perform and Document Waste Determinations
Each waste must be evaluated to determine whether it is subject to regulation as a
hazardous waste. This waste determination can be done by applying professional
knowledge to the composition of the waste, or by analysis of sample of the waste by a
certified laboratory.
To determine whether a waste is hazardous by applying professional knowledge, first
review the SDS [formerly called Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)] for the
purchased material(s) to determine if there are any hazardous ingredients or
characteristics. If materials have been mixed, be sure to review all applicable SDSs. For
example, a citrus -based cleaner would normally not exhibit a hazardous waste
characteristic — but if it is mixed with a chlorinated solvent or if it is contaminated with
lead or other toxic metals through use, it may exhibit a hazardous waste characteristic.
Waste sampling and analysis may be required to fully characterize the waste stream. If
sampling is preferred to determine whether a waste is hazardous, contact the Amec
Foster Wheeler Project Manager.
Document the method used to determine whether a waste is subject to regulation as a
hazardous waste. Any records obtained in this determination (i.e., analysis results, or
documentation of knowledge of the material) must be retained for a minimum of three
years from the time the waste was last generated.
2.2.3 Accumulation/Storage Time Limits
If Boretech generates more than 220 lbs (appproximately 27 gallons) per month but less
than 2,200 lbs (approximately 270 gallons) in a month of hazardous waste, then the
maximum allowed accumulation time is:
• 180 days (roughly 6 months), or
• 270 days if the hazardous waste will be transported more than 200 miles to a
registered treatment, storage, or disposal facility.
The quantity of hazardous waste held at one time at the facility may never exceed
13,200 lbs.
Boretech Hazardous Materials & Hazardous Waste Management Operations Plan Page 110
