Gasoline Operations Manual
Spills
Gasoline spills are fairly common_however,do not allow yourself to become casual in
your reaction to a spill. Even the smallest spill can cause an injury by a member slipping
and falling, and a spill is always a possible ignition source for a fire. Every spill must be
cleaned up immediately, of its size.
Main causes of a spill
• Members misuse of the equipment
• Sometimes a member thinks they are finished fueling and they remove the
nozzle from their vehicle before it has shut off only to find that gasoline is still
flowing.
• Nozzles inserted incorrectly into a vehicle's fuel port may not shut off
• Nozzles malfunctioning. Our equipment works incredibly hard to keep up with
the volume at our stations. Overtime, equipment will fail.
• Gasoline leaking from a vehicle.
• Incorrect procedures followed during a gasoline delivery.
FM.186 2,Hydrocarbon Mitigation Agent
Environmental Chemical Solutions,Inc, has brought to market a program that handles
hydrocarbon spills. The chemical works by breaking down the hydrocarbons into very
\ small particles and then micro-encapsulating them. This action immediately renders the
gasoline non-volatile, and allows naturally occurring bacteria to consume the
hydrocarbons. After correct treatment, gas spills can be picked up with paper shop towels
and-thrown in the trash. Die solution can even be sprayed on people's clothing that has
been splashed with gas. (Eyewash solution should still be used to rinse skin or eyes.)The
solution greatly reduces the need for our employees to come in direct contact with gas.
Every employee should have seen the ECS training video and should be familiar with the
proper procedures to use FM 186-2 correctly.Refer to the ECS literature at your station.
(There is a second copy of the same information in your warehouse manager's office.)
FM 186-2 is safer to use than absorbent towels, reduces the amount of hazardous waste
generated, and will prevent staining of the drive slab. It even allows bacteria to clean up
existing stains with repeated applications.
Safety 3-3 08/30/02
