September 10, 2004,4:45 pm a release of Sulphur Tri-oxide was reported to the EHD.
The release occurred at J.R. Simplot Company, 16777 S. Howland Road Lathrop CA.
The size of the release was 3500 lbs. of 5O3.
- Sulphur Tri-oxide is an acid gas that formed a brown, cloud•when it was.released. Sulphur .
Tri-oxide is slightly lighter than air and would tend to rise. The company representative
indicated that the heat would cause the gas to loose moisture and cause the acid gas to•
rise faster.
The company representative indicated that a coupler on a line failed and released the gas.
He also indicated that an acid safety system failed as well. The acid safety system
saturates the acid gas with water and the water is placed in with the production fluid.
There was a slight wind at the time of the release. The wind direction was South East 7-
10 miles per hour. Phil Cook of SJC OES phoned Ripon Fire and informed them of the
SO3 cloud heading their way. A subsequent contact with Ripon Fire indicated that the
Sulphur cloud had past Ripon and on reports of illness or injury.
Left the scene 5:30 pm.
yn',
