Additional on-site surface <br /> soil sampling of the drum storage and solvent disposal areas, and of other <br /> areas where fugitive dusts may be deposited, is needed to evaluate the <br /> significance of the air pathway. If it is determined that appreciable <br /> concentrations of contaminated fugitive dusts are being or have been <br /> transported via the air pathway, then appropriate off-site ambient air and <br /> surface soil monitoring should be considered. <br /> B. HUMAN EXPOSURE PATHWAYS <br /> Although slightly elevated concentrations of VOCs were detected in water <br /> samples from the CWS-77 municipal well, current concentrations of contaminants <br /> in water from that well are below levels of concern. It is important to note <br /> that other CWS wells in the area of the site are not contaminated; hence, it <br /> is not likely, based on current monitoring data, that appreciable <br /> concentrations of VOCs have been distributed to persons using CWS water for <br /> potable purposes (personal communication, Mike Camy, 1989) . Continued <br /> monitoring of CWS-77 and other CWS wells should ensure that, in the future, <br /> water distributed by the CWS is free of significant concentrations of VOCs. <br /> Past exposure to site-related contaminants by plant workers may have occurred <br /> as a result of ingestion of drinking water supplied by production wells. The <br /> levels of exposure, however, cannot be definitively quantified, although <br /> available monitoring data indicate that various VOCs, above levels of public <br /> health concern, have been detected in samples of production well water. <br /> Furthermore, plant workers may have been exposed in the past via inhalation <br /> due to the use of contaminated production well water in the manufacturing <br /> process (i.e, via volatilization of VOCs during such processes) . As <br /> previously indicated, production wells are no longer used for drinking or for <br /> processing. <br /> Elevated concentrations of some heavy metals were detected in on-site surface <br /> soil (sludge) samples from the ponds and surface drainage areas, at levels of <br /> potential health concern. However, significant human exposure (trespassers) <br /> via dermal and ingestioni routes is unlikely because the site is fenced and is <br /> an active industrial facility; only incidental, infrequent ingestion or dermal <br /> exposure is possible. Additional off-site monitoring of surface soils or <br /> sediments from drainage ditches is needed to completely evaluate those <br /> potential human exposure pathways. <br /> The concentrations of lead and VOCs detected in the Oak Park well are not <br /> considered to be of public health concern if the water is used only for <br /> irrigation and fountain drinking water. The concentrations of VOCs are not at <br /> levels of concern for acute or chronic (i.e. , short- or long-term) exposure. <br /> The concentration of lead, and the possibility of exposure via ingestion may <br /> be a long-term health concern; however, intermittent exposure from consumption <br /> of fountain water is not considered a human exposure pathway of concern. A <br /> survey of the park well's use is needed to verify that it is used only as an <br /> intermittent drinking water source. <br /> Additional monitoring data are needed to determine if significant exposure, <br /> especially to plant workers, is occurring as a result of the generation of <br /> 9 <br />
