1 Site Safety Plan • •
Job No. 4780201 Page 15
D. Emergency Treatment for Excess Exposure to Chemical(s)
' In all situations involving overexposure to a chemical(s), follow standard
procedures as outlined below for poison management, first aid, and
' cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Four different routes of exposure and their
respective first aid and poison management procedures are outlined below:
' 1 . Ingestion: IMMEDIATELY transport the person to the nearest
medical facility (see Figure 1 for location of San Jose Medical
' Center) or call the poison control center at telephone number 1-
800-662-9886.
2. Inhalation: IN THE EVENT THAT A PERSON IS UNCONSCIOUS,
DO NOT ENTER AN AREA WHERE A CHEMICAL CONTAMINANT
MAY BE PRESENT, OR A CONFINED SPACE, WITHOUT THE
PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT AND AT LEAST
ONE OTHER PERSON EQUIPPED WITH THE PROPER PPE AND A
SAFETY LINE OVERSEEING THE RESCUE OPERATION.
' IMMEDIATELY telephone 911 and appraise them of the exact
location of the accident and whether it involves a confined space.
Instruct an individual to go to the main entrance of the site to
' direct emergency medical response vehicles to the exact location
of the accident.
' 3. Skin Contact: In the event contact is made between exposed skin
and a chemical(s), IMMEDIATELY wash the exposed area with a
' large amount of water. Remove any contaminated clothing and
rewash the exposed skin. Transport the person to the hospital.
' 4. Eves: Hold eyelid(s) open, and IMMEDIATELY commence to rinse
the eye(s) with copious amounts of water, and continue to do so
for at least 15 minutes. If possible, have the person remove
' his/her contact lenses (if worn). Never permit the eyes to be
rubbed. If a decision is made to transport the injured individual to
a medical facility, instruct a person remaining on the site to
' telephone the receiving medical facility and state the situation,
including the nature of the injury. Transport the injured person to
the designated hospital. The SSO and/or Field Team Leader will
' have an eye wash kit.
' 5. Other Types of Exposure: If a person is unconscious, check for
cardiac function, and if necessary initiate Cardio-Pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR). Then telephone 911 and appraise them of
' the exact location of the accident.
' EzC, Inc. Apri14, 1997
