B. Employees need to remain in an alert, well-rested state in order to evaluate conditions at
the site that are unfamiliar to them.
4.3 Underground Utilities (C)
A. Underground utilities will be located prior to conducting subsurface work.
B. Employees will take precautions so that drillers do not hit utilities. If utilities are
encountered, 'live"wires will not be touched. Avoid contact with the drill rig in case it
becomes energized, and notify appropriate utility agencies as soon as possible.
4.4 Injury from Chemical Contaminants in the Soil and Water(D)
A. Petroleum products are the contaminants of concern at this site. Petroleum products
contain total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-D), total petroleum hydrocarbons as
gasoline (TPH-G), benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylenes, and oxygenates such as
methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE).
B. The hazards and safe working practices for chemicals expected to be found in the soil are
summarized below:
Hazardous
Substance Hazard Safe Work Practice
Diesel May cause mild dermatitis with
Protect skin from exposure by always
prolonged skin contact.
