After reviewing the manifests and the waste generation report, I inquired about a
non-hazardous waste classification for rinsewater waste. The wastewater is
generated along the printing presses and is currently managed as hazardous waste.
In 1993 Dopaco, Inc. analyzed a similar wastestream which proved to be
hazardous due to its high copper content. Since this similar wastestream is
hazardous, Dopaco, Inc. decided to treat all printing rinsewater as hazardous
waste to prevent any illegal disposal of hazardous waste.
IX. DISCUSSION WITH MANAGEMENT:
Upon completion of the inspection and records review, we discussed hazardous
waste minimization at the facility. According to the Dopaco, Inc. report, several
changes have been made to reduce hazardous waste. Low flow spray nozzles have
been installed in the OPMR room and along the printing line to reduce rinsate
waste, Safety Kleen solvents have been replaced with parts washers which
generate less hazardous waste, reusable absorbent socks have replaced disposable
absorbent, silicone oil for the cup tubes is reused, bulk materials are purchased
which eliminates plastic liners contaminated with ink, and better materials
management has been implemented to reduce miscellaneous wastestreams.
Upon completion of the records review and discussion, I left the facility.
c.
