23 September 2002-
Lori
002
Lori Oldfather, Fish & Game Warden
Department of Fish & Game
Sacramento Valley - Centrel Sierra Region
P.O. Box 30543
Stockton, CA 95213
Re: Fish kill on 19 September 2002, Calaveras diverting canal
Dear Lori,
Q uss
1
As you requested, here are DeltaKeeper's findings and report on the September
19 fish kill incident at the Calaveras diverting canal.
On Thursday morning, September 19, 2002 my superior Bill Jennings informed
me about a phone message that was left on the machine Wednesday night, September 18,
2002. The message was from one Rita Flegle (209-948-4018) regarding her concern
about dead fish in the canal near her home. After receiving the message I immediately
returned her call and asked for the information. Rita reported that her husband had been
walking the dog on Wednesday evening September 18, 2002 between 6-7pm on the levee
of the diverting canal when he noticed, "all the fish were dead". Rita informed me that
her husband had seen various types of dead fish floating down the river at Waterloo road
and highway 99. After hanging up I loaded sampling equipment and went out to the
alleged fish kill site. When I reached the waters edge underneath highway 99 at Waterloo
road I observed approximately 20-30 dead fish and one red crayfish in distress. Fish
species appeared to include: carp, catfish (large and small) and two others, possibly perch
and smelt. At 12:25 I attempted to call but failed to reach Rita for a more specific
location. At approximately 13:00 I called Fish & Game dispatch to report the incident
and had already begun taking readings with the Hydrolab Surveyor 4 multimeter, and
pulling grab samples of the water and fish using 250ml whirlpacks. The samples wen
sealed, labeled and stored on ice. Field parameters were taken at each sample site and
recorded on DeltaKeeper field log sheets. Copies of these original field logs are attached
to this report. The first sample was taken at 12:48.
While taking samples I was approached by a jogger who informed me that the
majority of the dead fish were about 200-300 yards upstream. The jogger (Mr. Guerrero
of Filbert Street in Stockton, if memory serves) proceeded to lead me to the site. We
ended up at a small dam east of 99, and west of both, the railroad bridge and E. Fremont
street. There were approximately 800-1000 dead fish visible on the dam, in the water and
near the banks of the canal. At 13:32 I called Fish and Game dispatch again and advised
them of the new location and the significance of the kill. Warden Lori Oldfather called
me back and let me know she was on her way. At approximately 14:00 Lori arrived at
the site and estimated the number killed to be 1000 or more. Lori decided to look for a
point source upstream and I headed back to my car. At approximately 14:34 Lori called
me back. She was a couple hundred yards upstream on the levee, right across from
