Excavation History: The site has been used by Gotelli Trucking Company
from 1937 until the tanks were removed 10/7/88. Jim Thorpe Oil, Inc. removed
one (1) 10,000 gallon diesel tank and one (1) 8,000 gallon diesel tank on
10/7/88. Both tanks appeared to be in good condition (no holes), however,
the fill pipes for the tanks were located very close to each other as the
tanks were end to end. As we excavated soil from around the fill ends, it
became obvious the soil was contaminated and we treated it so, putting it
on plastic and covering. The diesel stain and coloration of the ground was
the same on both tank fill ends and extended to 1/3 of the tank length,
9' to 10', covering the entire fill end of the tanks to a yet unknown depth.
The opposite end of both tanks were clean and showed no signs of contamination.
The pumps for dispensing diesel fuel were against the property line and centered
between the tanks. There is a chain link fence on the property line. Please
see attached soil sample results and layout of tanks. We feel the cause of
the contaminated soil was due to the fact no concrete or asphalt covered the
fill ends of the tanks and over the years of filling both tanks and trucks
diesel fuel spilled and seeped through the top soil add around the fill ends
of the tanks.
5.
