Mechanical-Use proper protective equipment. Primary Level D protective equipment is: <br /> hard hat, safety glasses, long sleeved coveralls, work gloves, steel toed boots. Follow <br /> proper procedures for working around heavy equipment. Stay clear of moving <br /> equipment. <br /> B. Electrical-No large equipment will be allowed within 10 feet of overhead power lines. <br /> Ensure all portable equipment is properly grounded. Check all cables and lines for <br /> fraying or age. <br /> C. Chemical-Use proper protective equipment for level of contamination detected such as <br /> gloves, goggles, Tyvek suits, respirators. Vapors in the work area will be monitored with <br /> an OVA. <br /> D. Noise-Ear protection will be used for cold cutting of manways in tanks. <br /> E. Temperature-Monitor for heat stress when temperatures are above 80 degrees F or when <br /> wearing chemical resistant coveralls/PPE. Effects of heat stress/heat related illnesses <br /> may include: <br /> 1. Heat Rash - Caused by exposure to heat, humid air and irritation by wet, <br /> scratching clothes. Heat rash interferes with the kidney's ability to tolerate heat. <br /> 2. Heat Cramps - Caused by excessive perspiration in which fluids and electrolytes <br /> (salts and minerals) are not adequately replaced. Symptoms are muscle cramps <br /> and stomach pain which occur after work has stopped. <br /> 3. Heat Exhaustion - Caused by stress on various organs due to the body trying to <br /> cool itself. Symptoms are pale, moist skin, profuse sweating, weakness and <br /> dizziness. Cool victim. - Seek medical assistance immediately. <br /> 4. Heat Stroke - The most serious consequence of heat stress. It is caused by total <br /> failure of the body's cooling system. Signs are red, dry, hot skin, lack of <br /> perspiration, nausea, rapid pulse and unconsciousness. The body must be cooled <br /> immediately to prevent death- Seek emergency medical aid immediately. <br />
