U-Haul
Facility Number 709-83,450 North Cherokee Lane
Lodi, California
WPI Project#96237
HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
Page 13
Heat Stress Monitoring
Monitoring should begin when ambient temperatures reach 80°, Fahrenheit (F). If
impervious clothing is being worn, monitoring should commence at 70° F, or above.
When temperatures exceed 85° F, workers will be monitored after every work period.
Heart rate should be measured for 30 seconds prior to work start-up. Heart rate will then
be measured for 30 seconds at the beginning of the rest period. The heart rate should not
exceed 110 beats per minute. If the heart rate is higher, the next work period should be
shortened by 25 percent. The heart rate should then be measured again, once each minute
for 2 minutes after the initial measurement. The heart rate should decrease by 10 beats
per minute between each successive measurement. If the heart rate does not decrease by
a total of 20 beats, work should not begin until it has lowered and the next work period
should be reduced by 25%.
General Precautions
1. Provide plenty of liquids such as water or special drink mixes for heat.
2. Provide water hoses to reduce body temperature and cool protective clothing.
3. In extremely hot weather, conduct work in early morning or evening.
4. Provide shelter for personnel taking breaks where they can avoid direct exposure
to heat and sunlight.
F. Physical-Excavation shall be sufficiently barricaded to prevent falls into open excavation.
No one shall enter an excavation below the depth of 5 feet unless the excavation is sloped
or shored adequately to prevent cave-in or collapse.
