v
8.0 Hazard Control
Control of potential on-site hazards involves understanding as well as application of the following topics:
Training Requirements, General Work Practices, Contaminant Monitoring, Personal Protective
Equipment, Decontamination, and Emergency Procedures. These topics are discussed below:
8.1 Training Requirements
All field personnel are required to complete a basic training course before assignment to any field
activities. Basic training includes a minimum of 40 hours of instruction in accordance with OSHA
29 CFR 1910.120. Topics covered include: recognition, evaluation and control of chemical and
physical hazards, personal protective clothing and equipment, respiratory protection,
environmental monitoring equipment, site.safety plan development, decontamination procedures,
and practical exercise in the use of personal protective equipment and monitoring instruments. In
addition, a minimum of eight(8)hours of refresher training is required annually in order to
_ maintain proficiency in the areas covered in the basic training course.
All site workers receive respirator fit testing annually and are trained in the selection, fit, use and
limitation of respiratory protection equipment during the 40-hour training course. Site workers
who may be required to wear levels A or B protection also receive additional training in the
specific equipment to be used.
Ogiso Environmental employees who are responsible for directing site operations also receive an
additional eight (8)hours of site management training which includes: Management of Hazardous
_ Waste Site Operations, Site Control Enforcement, Emergency Response Coordination, and
Community Health and Safety Relations.
Prior to commencement of field operations, personnel receive site specific training and are
required to verify that they have read and understand the Health and Safety Plan.
8.2 General Work Practices
The implementation of work zones facilitates compliance with the required work practices.
Therefore, exclusion, contamination reduction, and support zones will be created at the work site.
An exclusion zone will be maintained around the site by placement of signs, barricades, and
barricade tape. The zones shall be secured by fencing. The size and shape of the exclusion zones
will be determined by the conditions on the site. This area will be large enough to encompass the
_ potentially hazardous zone around the site. Due to the anticipated lack of significant
contamination in the air at the work site, the contamination reduction zone will be reduced, but
still present, and placed at the periphery of the exclusion zone. The contamination reduction zone
_ will simply consist of a decontamination corridor and equipment drop near the exit of the
exclusion zone.
_ 9.0 Medical Surveillance
All Ogiso Environmental personnel and associated subcontractors have successfully completed a physical
examination which meets the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 (F)prior to entering work zones. Ogiso
Environmental personnel are given a baseline physical and undergo a physical examination annually
which is performed by a physician Board-Certified in Occupational Medicine. The physician is made
familiar with the job-related duties of each employee examined. The physical examination consists of the
_ following, at a minitmtm:
