4 -rrl7
GILDARCO TANK MONITOR
SYSTEM OVFRVIEw
The Gilbarco Tank Monitor is a precision Instrument that measures product
levels In petroleum underground storage tanks. it consists of a console ,
which is mounted Indoors, and aprobe which Is mounted inside each tank to be
monitored. One console can handle up to 8 probes.
The console , which has a very powerful microprocessor, contains all the
programming necessary to communicate with the probes . The console is
connected to each probe by a coaxial cable. Each probe contains .ten
ultrasonic transducer located near the lower end and a series of calibre' lon
reflectors running along the length of the probe . The ultrasonic (h; gh
frequency sound) transducer can be thought of as a submerged microphone .
The Tank Monitor actually measures time . It measures the time It takes the
ultrasonic sicnal to cc from the transducer (bottom of the tank) to the
su*face of the fuel , the reflectors which are set at precise intervals along
the lenoth of the probe are used to calculate velocity Of the signal ,
therefore, by knowing velocity end time elapsed, the Tank Monitor can
eeternlne the distance (or height of the fuel ) using the formUla Distance m
Velocity x Time.
P.fter installation and power-up , the operation Of the Task Monitor 15
aUt OmatiC . There Is no further equipment sot up or operator involvement
required to make fuel level change measurements.
II . SUMMARY OF PERFOkMANCE
Height Measurement Precision
The Tank Monitor Is designed to measure fuel level change within a standard
deviation of less than .01 gallons in a half filled 10,000 gallon tan(:.
Tests documenting this performance were conducted by simulating minute fuel
level increases and decreases In a test tank. This was done by Insertirc a
dlsplacer of a known volume into the fuel for 2 minutes and removing It fcr 2
minutes over a 2 hour period. The process was repeated using variouS size
dlsplacers . These tests were Conducted under the direction of an Independent
research firm, Vista Research of Palo Alto, Cal . A summery of their analsi5
is shown on Attachment I .
