0
Network p L rc SNP-104-601
Practices .DD) 1I/7/01
6.4 Diesel Fuel Contaminants
Several other items can be present in diesel fuel and can degrade performance. Personnel take
immediate action to have these items removed.
6.41 Water
Water increases bacteria growth, which causes sludge and algae to develop. Technicians check the
monitoring unit printout and LED display for water in the UST and have any water removed as soon as
possible.
6.4.2 Other Contaminants
Dirt, sand and other contaminants routinely find their way into the fuel stored in USTs. Fuel should be
sampled at two-year intervals to check for contaminants.
When sampling for contaminants,it is important to sample the fuel during or just after the generator has
been run. The action of drawing fuel from the tank causes settled contaminants to become suspended
in the fuel and pumped to the generator.
The sample is sent to a certified lab and tested for contaminants. When fuel contamination levels
exceed 20 parts per million, the fuel must be removed from the tank and disposed of. (Refer to section
6.2 for proper disposal procedures.) While the UST is empty, the tank itself must be cleaned. Failure
to clean the tank will cause any new fuel stared in the tank to be contaminated also. The generator
maintenance vendor is responsible,by contract, for pulling fuel samples and testing them during regular
scheduled maintenance visits. BMC is responsible for maintaining documentation of testing and all
action items performed.
Fuel tank cleaning is contracted with a professional decontamination company.
10
Copyright 01999-2001 Sprint Corporation
The information in this document is proprietary.
