• SNF-000-803
-1 SPruart., Network Practices (LD1 ) 4/12/2001
3. Emergency Response Process
3.1 Local Reporting Personnel
Sprint personnel use the following instructions when confronted with a hazardous condition:
1. Establish that a hazardous condition exists. (See Section 2.1, Hazardous Condition Description.) Identify the
hazardous substance and estimate the amount that has been released. Use the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
and container label guidelines to assist in identifying chemical substances and amounts.
Note: If you need information on a chemical/compound or need to obtain a Material Safety Data Sheet, log onto the
Environmental Health and Safety department web site at http://ppld.corp.sprint.conVchs/ and click on the "MSDS
System"icon, or call 1-877-EHS-4HLP (347-4457), Option 1. (This is a 24-hour hot-line available through Chem-
Tel,Inc.)
2. First and foremost, ensure the safety of all personnel. If necessary, direct traffic and personnel away from the
hazardous area.
3. If possible, stop the source of the contamination; otherwise, mitigate the situation by trying to divert the spill or
contain the contaminants. In the event of a fire, attempt to extinguish it by using the appropriate fire extinguisher. If
this is unsuccessful, call the fire department.
Note: Use extreme caution; do not endanger yourself or other personnel!
If the spill is an incidental release (i.e., less than five gallons) and can be safely contained by facility personnel,
implement appropriate response procedures. Place the spilled material in an appropriate container and label the
container, designating its contents. Store the container until it can be properly disposed. Contact your Regional
Environmental Health and Safety Manager for guidelines on proper disposal.
Only employees who are trained in spill prevention and response procedures participate in the removal/remediation
of hazardous substance spills.
4. If the spill is greater than five gallons, Network Operations personnel will notify the appropriate control center as
soon as possible after the detection of the spill. If an emergency situation exists, evacuate the building accordingly.
When non-Network Operations personnel are confronted with a hazardous condition, they immediately notify
Sprint's Environmental Health and Safety Department. (See Table A for contact numbers.)
5. Notify your supervisor or local management of the hazardous condition.
6. Notify local emergency response agencies,i.e.,911 calls, fire department, ambulance service, etc.
Note: Examples of details to discuss with the local authorities are how, when, and where the release/accident
occurred, what chemical substance was released, etc.
The Environmental Health and Safety Department will notify the appropriate federal, state, and local regulatory
agencies as required.
4
Copyright 01999 Sprint Corporation
The information in this document is proprietary.
