4.0 SOIL SAMPLING AND LABORATORY ANALYSES
4.1 SOIL SAMPLING
In accordance with Mr. von Flue's instruction, a soil sample was collected at approximately one
foot below each end of the piping trench. Sample PPN-2 was collected at approximately two
feet BGS from the northeastern end of the trench, and sample PPS-2.5 was collected at
approximately 2.5 feet BGS near the southwestern end. Soil sampling locations are shown on
Figure 3.
. Soil samples were collected using a slide-hammer containing a new, clean stainless steel liner.
Each stainless steel liner was sealed with Teflon sheets and vinyl end caps, labeled, stored on
ice in a thermally insulated cooler, and transported under chain-of-custody protocol to
McCampbell Analytical, Inc., a state-certified analytical laboratory, located in Pittsburg,
California. Reusable sampling equipment was thoroughly washed with a Liqui-Nox solution,
_ rinsed with tap water, and then rinsed with distilled water.
In accordance with guidance from Mr. von Flue, approximately one cubic yard of soil removed
during piping removal activities (from the 1987 excavation backfill) was placed back into the
1987 excavation. Technical guidance for the soil sampling program was provided by a
California Professional Geologist.
r
4.2 LABORATORY ANALYSES
The soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
(TPH-g) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
w
and xylenes (BTEX), seven fuel oxygenates [methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), tertiary butyl
alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary amyl
methyl ether (TAME), ethanol, and methanol], and fuel additives [1,2-dibromoethane (1,2-
DBA) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA)] by EPA Method 8260B and total lead by EPA
Method 6010C.
5.0 ANALYTICAL DATA FOR SOIL
Analytical results for the two soil samples are summarized in Table 1, and the laboratory
analytical report and chain-of-custody documentation are included in Appendix B.
r
TPH-g, BTEX, fuel oxygenates, fuel additives, and remaining VOCs, were not detected in
either sample.
Lead was detected in soil samples PPN-2 and PPS-2.5, at 9.0 and 24 milligrams-per-kilogram
SLAIR 2007.11 Pipline Removal Report 3
