Site Safety Plan for Excavation Activities April 8, 1996 <br /> Military Department OMS#24-Stockton <br /> CHEMICAL HAZARDS: <br /> • Medicine and alcohol can intensify the effect from exposures to toxic chemicals. <br /> Prescription drugs should not be taken by personnel on operations where the potential <br /> for absorption, inhalation, or ingestion of toxic substances exist unless specifically <br /> approved by a qualified physician. Consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly <br /> prohibited during operations. <br /> • Unnecessary contact with contamination or suspected contaminated surfaces should be <br /> avoided. Do not walk through puddles, leachate, or discolored surfaces. Do not sit, <br /> lean, or place equipment on drums, containers, or soil suspected of being <br /> contaminated. <br /> • if sampling is required, remote sampling devices will be used to minimize exposure to <br /> potentially contaminated materials. <br /> • Whenever possible, operations should be conducted upwind from potential sources of <br /> airborne contaminates. <br /> • Petroleum hydrocarbon airborne contaminates will be monitored by a hydrocarbon <br /> monitoring device (Gas Tech ) during all operations at the sites. <br /> • Proper PPE shall be worn when handling or sampling contaminated, or potentially <br /> contaminated, materials. <br /> • Results from the air monitoring will be used to select appropriate PPE and to <br /> determine when protective measures are needed. <br /> For reWiratory protection the following rules shall apply: <br /> • Only properly cleaned, maintained, IVIOSH/MSHA approved respirators shall be used <br /> on site. <br /> 6 <br />
