IV. SITE EVALUATION
The primary chemical hazard to which field personnel may be potentially exposed is
gasoline and possible diesel hydrocarbon vapors volatilizing from the excavation of
possible contaminated soils.
The secondary chemical hazard would be the dry ice used to inert the U.S.T..
A. Chemical Hazards
1.) Gasoline / C.A.S. # 8006-61-9-LX3300000 - 1203 27
• Clear liquid with a characteristic liquid.
• Properties: a complex mixture of volatile hydrocarbons
• flash point: -45°F, boiling point: 102°F, LEL 1.4%, UEL 7.6%,
• ACGIH TLV: TWA 300 ppm
• ACGIH STEL: 500 ppm
• ODOR Threshold: .3 ppm
• Gasoline is toxic by inhalation. Human systemic effects by inhalation: cough,
conjunctiva irritation, hallucinations or distorted perceptions. Repeated or prolonged
dermal exposure causes dermatitis. Can cause blistering of the skin. Inhalation or
ingestion can cause central nervous system depression. Pulmonary aspiration can cause
severe pneumonitis. Some addiction has been reported from inhalation of fumes. Even
brief inhalations of high concentrations can cause fatal pulmonary edema. The vapors are
considered to be moderately poisonous. If its concentration in air is sufficiently high to
reduce the oxygen content below that needed to maintain life, it acts as a simply
asphyxiant. A human eye irritant. to fight fire use foam, CO2, dry chemical.
2.) Diesel
• Properties: aromatic semi -volatile liquid; flash point -50°F, d: <1.0, Vapor density 3.0-
4.0, LEL 1.3%, UEL 6.0%,
• ACGIH TLV: TWA 300 ppm
• ACGIH STEL: 500 ppm
• ODOR Tbreshold:.3 ppm
• Diesel is mildly toxic by inhalation. Human systemic effects by inhalation: cough,
conjunctiva irritation, hallucinations or distorted perceptions. Repeated or prolonged
dermal exposure causes dermatitis.
